Providence School Board discusses ultimatum to avoid budget cuts

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Providence School Board met Wednesday to discuss the $10.9 million ultimatum made by the superintendent to avoid deep budget cuts.
Providence Public Schools Superintendent Javier Montañez said that catastrophic cuts could be imminent if the city does not fill the funding gap that was revealed on Oct. 10.
Officials say many jobs are on the chopping block, and certain arts and sports programs could also be in jeopardy.
A public comment section was held hours into the meeting, making students wait for their chance to express their frustration.
“You guys had so much time to talk, we didn’t have enough,” one student said. “We’re here in my school, and it doesn’t even feel like my school.”
Advocates said the lack of priority for students is par for the course.
“We’ve been bringing up the issue of lack of funding for schools for a very long time,” Young Voices Program Manager Andrea Gonzalez Sanchez said. “People have not been paying attention where they should be paying attention.”
