NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) — Those in search of the Ocean State's most haunted place shouldn't make their way over to "The Conjuring" house, according to Thrillist. Thrillist recently compiled a list of the most haunted places in each state, which range from abandoned hospitals and prisons to ominous hotels and cemeteries. Though Rhode Island is best known for the Burrillville farmhouse made famous by the 2013 horror blockbuster "The Conjuring," Thrillist determined it actually isn't the state's most chilling year-round haunt. Instead, Thrillist chose the White Horse Tavern in Newport. "Like many a campfire tale, this one begins with two drifters. They showed up at the tavern in the 1720s looking for a room," Thrillist wrote. "The next day, the owners found one dead by the fireplace and the other completely vanished." Thrillist said the man's ghost has been spotted by the fireplace. Guests have also reported hearing footsteps "all over the place," as well as the presence of a colonial spirit in the upstairs bathroom. It's unclear if this story has any merit. The White Horse Tavern declined to comment on Thrillist's list, explaining that the restaurant solely focuses on "the true historical aspect of the building." The White Horse Tavern is believed to be the oldest operating restaurant in the country. The building was first constructed back in 1652 and was converted into a tavern more than two decades later. For nearly a century, the tavern served as a courthouse, city hall and, most notably, a meeting place for the Rhode Island General Assembly. "No building is believed to be more typical of colonial Newport than the White Horse Tavern, with its clapboard walls, gambrel roof and plain pediment doors bordering the sidewalk," according to the tavern's website. The tavern, which has had nine owners in its more than 350-year history, was officially placed on the National Register of Historic Places back in 1972. Massachusetts' most haunted place, meanwhile, doesn't come as much of a surprise. Thrillist crowned the Lizzie Borden House as the Bay State's greatest year-round haunt. The Fall River home was made famous by the unsolved double murder of its namesake's father and stepmother back in 1892. "In case you don't remember the world's most disturbing nursery rhyme, Lizzie Borden hacked up her parents with an axe," Thrillist said. "This home painstakingly furnished to look exactly as it did on the morning of the murders will creep you right out." The mystery surrounding the murders still haunts the city of Fall River more than 130 years later.
