SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A Sioux Falls nonprofit is hosting a unique culinary event Thursday evening. Omar Thornton is known for his passion for food. People used to come from all over for a one-of-a-kind meal at his restaurant in Garretson. More than clothes: Remembering baby Kai But what you might not know is that he's struggled with alcohol and substance use. "I'm in recovery. It's going to be occurring for all my life. It's something that's part of my life and it's going to stay a part of my life," Omar Thornton said. With the support of a local nonprofit, Thornton is thankful to say he hasn't used drugs or alcohol in more than 8 years. "Face It Together was the first place when I decided for myself to go and needing the help for myself. This was the first place I went," Thornton said. Now, Thorton is giving back to the organization that helped change his life. "For tomorrow night, we have a shrimp and sausage and a Cajun type of Tuscan type of cream sauce that we're going to be placed in. And then we'll have a sauteed cherry tomatoes that we're going to place on top of it as a garnish," cooks and bakers kitchen, Omar Thornton said. He's one of a dozen local chefs taking part in the Face it in the Fire event. "We will have ten-floor chefs that will also be creating their culinary creations that will be voted on for people's choice. And then also their decorations on their table will also be voted on by attendees," White said. But all eyes will be on the stage, where two chefs will face off. "They will come with their idea of what they're making and most of the ingredients. We do have a secret ingredient that will be unveiled at the event that they will need to figure out how they will incorporate into what they're making," Face it Together CEO, Wendy White said. All of the money raised will help local people who are struggling with addiction. "Even though it's a part of you, you yourself have to be the one ready for change. You're not alone in facing together and just like in its name that you are. And you are realizing that in this tough battle, not only are there people that's there that have been through it, but they're going to be with you as you're going through it," Thornton said. The event starts at 5:30 Thursday night and goes until 8. Click here for more information on the event and to buy tickets.
