NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Every October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and a TV star from the hit 1990's sitcom, "Boy Meets World," Danielle Fishel, is on a mission to raise awareness after her own diagnosis. We watched 90's TV star, director and breast cancer survivor Danielle Fishel grow up on "Boy Meets World," and then we watched her again on the spin-off "Girl Meets World" years later. Fishel played "Topanga." "Topanga doesn't tell you to do something and then you ignore it. When Topanga tells you to do something, you have to take it into consideration," Fishel said. 90s sitcom star Candace Cameron Bure stars in new movie ‘Unsung Hero’ After being diagnosed with breast cancer, she now hopes to make a world of a difference. "I'm feeling great. I had two successful surgeries, one in August and one in September. Currently, there's no evidence of cancer in my body, which I'm very grateful for," she said. She went on to say, "Because I went to my annual exam is the reason I found out I had cancer at stage zero." Fishel said that "The Aflac Matters Wellness Survey" revealed that 65% of millennials put off their annual exams. "I know if I could use my platform to share the importance of those yearly exams, I wanted to do it," she said. Fans of the show remember "Topanga" means business. "I'm here to say 'Topanga' definitely would've been that friend to gently nudge you to get your yearly check-ups," she said. TV talk show host Tamron Hall talks about her love for New Orleans Through Fishel's cancer journey, she's been met with lots of support. "No one wants to hear they have cancer, but if you do, I promise you'll meet some of the greatest people you've ever met in your life. The cancer community is comforting and welcoming and so helpful, and every person I know who's ever had cancer has reached out to me to say that I'm here for you," she said. And like her TV character who was there for all of us growing up, we're still here for her. "We are all a lot stronger than we realize," Fishel said. Fishel is married and the mother of two boys.
