OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Johnson County’s long wait for the new Sports Park at BluHawk ends soon. On Wednesday, developers gave FOX4 cameras a tour of the new 300-acre sports facility ahead of its grand opening on October 26. Engineers on this project hope to see it generate millions of dollars for south Overland Park. Phase One of the multi-use project is a 260,000 square foot state-of-the-art building that has the potential to generate $50 million annually, according to developers with Price Brothers. “To see where it is today is just beyond expectation,” Greg Jackson, BluHawk Sports Park General Manager, said on Wednesday. Multiple Missouri fire departments helping people learn CPR Jackson showed off the $125 million facility’s arrangements for basketball and volleyball tournaments, as well as the official-sized ice rink, which can be used for junior hockey events. Fans and players in that sport’s local community haven’t had a home for large events in years. The sports park also has a bowling alley, video games, and other family entertainment options. “This is truly going to be a destination point for Kansas City and probably the metro and probably the tri-state area and surrounding states. People are going to want to come here. They’re going to want to spend time here. They’ll want to stay here,” Jackson said. Developers will soon add retail space, restaurants and hotels. The sports park is already hosting the 2025 Kansas Class 6A High School Wrestling Tournament in February. That’s exciting to developer Bart Lowen, who’s waited nearly 20 years for this to flourish. Work on this sports park started in 2004, and over the years, some wondered if it would ever open. See the latest headlines in Kansas City and across Kansas, Missouri “The city is growing in this direction. The highway improvements are bringing traffic out here. It’s alleviating all that traffic. The growth is headed down the 69 corridor. We’re happy to be on that path as well,” Lowen, who works for PB Development, said. Phase Two of this project will cost an additional $32 million, adding more basketball courts and another ice rink. Project planners believe a ribbon cutting for that addition could happen in the next two years.
