Chesterfield County deputies lined Highway 102 near Colin King Road setting a perimeter searching for four inmates who escaped from the Chesterfield County Detention Center late Monday night. Jail staff noticed Anton Bennet, Kyonne Mcleod, De’Shawn Fox, and Emanuel Planco were missing early Tuesday morning several hours after the group kicked down a steel door to get out of the facility. “The biggest challenge? The head start they had on us,” Sheriff Cambo Streater said. “It would be a lot easier if we were right behind them.” Sheriff Streater says deputies from Chesterfield County, Darlington County, and SLED spent Wednesday afternoon searching rugged terrain using several resources after authorities received a tip that someone might have spotted an escapee. “It’s forest, sand and pine trees, and hills and it’s hard to navigate but we’re using bloodhounds tracking dogs drones and a helicopter,” Sheriff Streater said. This latest incident makes at least six inmates that have escaped from the Chesterfield County detention center in two years. Accused murderer Emanuel Bedford wiggled his way through a loose window and over a barbed wire fence to escape in June of 2023. Sheriff Streater says the men currently on the loose are not accused of violent crimes. The Sheriff says the four inmates kicked down a steel door and escaped Monday night. When asked about the pattern of escapes, Sheriff Streater says the jail was built in the 60s and is now dealing with overcrowding concerns. “We’re going to look into what happened, where responsibility lies and we’re going to fix it,” Sheriff Streater said. “If that means making changes on a personnel level we’ll do whatever we have to do.” As the search for the inmates continues, the sheriff says tips from the public are critical. “We got over 800 square miles in Chesterfield County, we can’t be everywhere at all times so we need the citizens to let us know again if you see something out of the ordinary please call us,” Sheriff Streater said. Streater says a woman accused of helping the group escape is in custody right now and is cooperating in the investigation. There is a tipline set up at 843-287-0235. “We’re looking, I’m out here. We got resources in several states looking,” Sheriff Streater said.
