CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A system outage slowed what some feel is an already slow system. Charlotte residents are frustrated with long DMV wait times and want a change. Getting in and out of a North Carolina DMV is rarely a fast task. Marquia Blackmon says she spent Wednesday trying to renew her driver’s license. Blackmon knew the wait would be long and decided to call out of work for the day. Blackmon wanted to schedule an appointment online with the DMV closest to her on David Taylor Drive. Unfortunately she says that wasn’t possible because the next available online appointment wasn’t until January. Blackmon had no choice but to walk-in. Blackmon says she showed up to the DMV just after 12 p.m., when walk-in appointments open. She scanned the QR code to reserve her spot in line spot in line, but was given bad news about a state wide DMV outage. DMV employees were not sure what caused the system outage, but do say it slowed operations until late in the afternoon. “The system went down today, which I heard it went down Monday as well. So I’m sure that delayed it even more,” Blackmon said. “They were saying they didn’t have an ETA and that it was statewide.” Walk-ins like Blackmon were told to wait in their car for a text. A man, who did not want to be identified, says he was turned away from a DMV last week. He tried to walk-in again Wednesday and waited all day for a 20 minute appointment. He says he missed two days of work while trying to renew his license. “We should not expect residents to have to wait hours on end or even have to attempt two or three times in a row to get serviced,” said a DMV visitor who did not want to be named. Charlotte residents who visited the DMV say they’re frustrated with the lack of information from the given to residents about the system outage. Some have hope the line system will improve.
