Demetrius “Big Meech” Flenory, co-founder of the infamous Black Mafia Family, has been released from federal prison. Flenory, 56, was transferred to a halfway house in Florida, TMZ reported Wednesday. He was released Tuesday, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons. “It’s been inspiring to witness the power of hope and resilience,” his attorney, Brittany Barnett, told Complex. “He used his time in prison to focus on personal growth and transformation, and now he has the opportunity to begin a new chapter.” It’s unclear when Flenory will officially complete his sentence; the Bureau of Prisons website lists his release date as Jan. 27, 2026. Flenory and his brother, Terry Lee “Southwest T” Flenory,” were each sentenced to 30 years in prison in 2008 for running a criminal organization, specifically the Black Mafia Family. The brothers were arrested in 2005 along with dozens of accused associates. They pleaded guilty in 2007. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Terry Flenory successfully applied for early release and has been free for the past four years. His brother’s application was denied. The Flenorys trafficked large quantities of cocaine across the country in the 1990s and early 2000s, according to federal investigators. They started out with a small operation in their hometown of Detroit before expanding nationally. In the 2000s, the duo launched BMF entertainment, a music promoter that functioned as a front, according to the feds. They were known for relationships with stars like Diddy, T.I., Jay Z and Jeezy, among others. A show about the brothers, “Black Mafia Family,” debuted on Starz in 2021 and was produced in part by 50 Cent. “It’s a lifestyle choice that people are familiar with on a street level,” 50 Cent told The Associated Press before the series premiered. “Beautiful things do come out of the hardships or the hard lifestyle.”
