EL CAJON, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) -- A 71-year-old man has died after he became the victim of a stabbing in El Cajon earlier this month, police said Wednesday in a release. According to the El Cajon Police Department, officers responded to a report of a stabbing in the 800 block of Benedict Avenue on Oct. 5 around 9:15 p.m. When they arrived, officers found a suspect armed with a knife, the release stated. The suspect has been identified as 44-year-old Gregory Carlomagno. Family of Menendez brothers discuss review of life sentences for killing parents The victim was identified as Steven Barron, 71, who was found with a stab wound to his torso. He was taken to the hospital for treatment. Both Carlomagno and Barron were homeless and had recently met, according to police. Shortly before the incident, Barron was giving Carlomagno a ride to a store when his car broke down, authorities said. For reasons still under investigation, Carlomagno stabbed Barron. Police attempted to detain Carlomagno when they responded to the scene, but he ran away and attempted to carjack a passerby who was able to escape, according to authorities. Carlomagno was eventually stopped by officers in the 700 block of W. Main Street and taken into custody. He is currently being held in San Diego County Central Jail, police said. Couple attacked by knife-wielding man at North Clairemont Park On Saturday, officers learned that Barron had succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. At the time of the stabbing, Carlomagno was on felony probation for grant theft and has an extensive arrest history, including a felony conviction for elder abuse, police said.
