(KRON) -- Former San Jose State University Women's Basketball standout Tyra Whitehead has passed away, according to a social media post from SJSU Women's Basketball. Whitehead was a forward who went on to become a WNBA prospect with the Washington Mystics. Whitehead, 26, was found dead at her apartment in Romania earlier this month. "Our deepest condolences to the friends and family of former San Jose State Women's Basketball player Tyra Whitehead '21," said SJSU on X. "Tyra's spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those she inspired. May she rest in peace." Whitehead was a native of Richmond, Virginia and represented Cosby High School before going on to SJSU. At the time of her passing, Whitehead was playing for CSM Targoviste, the 12-time champions of the Romanian women's professional basketball league. "We mourn the untimely death of a young player, and our thoughts and prayers go out to her family and loved ones in these difficult times," the team said.
