A high-ranking veteran Trenton police officer has filed a tort claim seeking damages after she crossed paths with an influential city official. Lt. Alexis Durlacher vs. City of Trenton represents a city hall showdown that includes Archie Liston, interim director of Housing and Economic Development. Arch Liston. (submitted photo) The complaint explains that on or about July 30, 2024 at approximately 1 p.m.  Durlacher, a Lieutenant in the Trenton Police Department and practitioner of the Jewish faith, arrived at City Hall to retrieve records relating to the purchase of Columbus Kennel, a dog shelter. Durlacher spoke to Liston, who allegedly referenced her and others who work with Columbus Kennel as Nazis. He allegedly added that all they do at the shelter is euthanize dogs in a manner similar to the operation of a Nazi concentration camp. The Liston comments caused concern as Durlacher reeled about phrases and words closely associated to Jewish history. Josie Pabon and other supervisors, officers and employees of the City of Trenton allegedly were present and/or aware and/or have information regarding this incident. Durlacher alleges she previously complained to other supervisors, officers and employees of the City of Trenton without sufficient action being taken against Liston, a former chief of staff for Mayor Reed Gusciora. Liston resigned that position in July 2023 before being tapped for his current interim position in July of this year as Gusciora shuffled several cabinet positions. On the day of her altercation with Liston, Durlacher crossed paths with Trenton Law Director Wes Bridges who instructed the police officer to document details of the incident. In a letter written by Durlacher and delivered to city officials, she described Liston’s behavior as disgusting, bigoted, antisemitic, and should NOT be coming from any employee, let alone someone who is part of the mayor’s cabinet. Durlacher alleged other incidents had occurred opposite Liston and said she complained to Trenton Police Director Steve Wilson who addressed it “one on one” with Liston in the past. Former Business Administrator Adam Cruz allegedly confronted Liston regarding his interactions with Durlacher. While Mayor Gusciora declined to comment about the Durlacher claims, Director Bridges copied Business Administrator Maria Richardson, Chief of Staff Jim Beach, and Gusciora in a September 5 email obtained by The Trentonian. “Please find attached report on the Liston/Durlacher incident,” alerted Bridges. “In anticipation of litigation, we should adopt recommendations to offer a written warning and provide training which we already have in place. “I will have counsel draft a letter to Durlacher, “that the investigation is completed and based on the investigative report…..the city will be issuing certain discipline and other corrective action including, but not limited to, training in response to your complaint. This matter is now closed.” Liston did not respond to a request for comment messaged to his office. Editor’s Note: Full disclosure, Lt. Durlacher and reporter/columnist L.A. Parker are friends and Parker has written about Durlacher and her achievements in the past.
