PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) -- Virginia State University (VSU) has confirmed the passing of its Associate Vice President for Athletics, Peggy Davis. The university shared that, for over 27 years, Davis was a leader in its Athletics Department -- ensuring the success of student-athletes in the classroom and beyond. Throughout her tenure at VSU, she was honored with several honorary recognitions, including the NCAA Division II Award of Excellence in 2020 and the Minority Opportunities Athletic Association (MOAA) Distinguished Service Award in 2021, according to VSU. In addition, Davis was also named the CIAA Athletic Director of the Year seven times and served as Interim Commissioner of the CIAA -- becoming the first woman to ever lead the athletic conference. Under Davis' leadership, the VSU Trojans have received 20 NCAA Division II tournament appearances, 26 CIAA Championship titles, 20 CIAA Divisional titles and 44 Coach of the Year honor recognitions. Virginia State University extends its sincerest condolences for the loss of Peggy Davis to her family, friends, the athletics department and the VSU community.
