PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — AAA reminds drivers to be alert for deer when driving, as deer crashes surge between October and December. AAA said most deer-related crashes occur during sunset hours, but can occur throughout the day.  In 2023, Rhode Island had 1,374 deer-related car crashes, according to the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management.  In 2022, 173 people were killed in animal collision crashes, and over 33,000 people were injured, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.  The NHTSA said about half of those crashes occurred between October and December.  To avoid deer crashes, AAA recommends drivers should:  Scan the shoulders of the road incase deer dash out. Keep your speed down for reaction time. Be careful for limited visibility on curves or hills. Use your horn to frighten animals away from your car. If you spot one deer, be prepared to see more. Use your high beams along dark roadways if there is no oncoming traffic.  If a crash is unavoidable, apply the brakes and try to remain in your lane and avoid other vehicles. Wear your seat belt. If a crash occurs, move the vehicle to a safe location and report the incident to RIDEM at 401-222-3070.  Contact your insurance company to report any damage to your car.
