PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Providence Police Department released a statement responding to Patriots player Christian Barmore’s complaint of racism after he was pulled over. Barmore was stopped by police for an expired registration in the area of Elmwood Avenue and Parkis Avenue. Police said that Barmore had “an attitude towards police,” and when requested for proper paperwork for the vehicle, he handed it over in “an aggressive manner.” “I just experienced for the first time five Providence cops being very unprofessional, racism at it’s finest,” Barmore said in a social media post that has since been deleted. In his response, Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez said that the department takes public concerns “very seriously and with the utmost professionalism” but noted the officer followed protocol and regulations. “We understand that any encounter with law enforcement can be stressful, however, it’s important to note that officers are required to enforce all applicable laws, including those related to vehicle registration,” he said. “We will continue to review the situation to ensure that proper procedures were followed and to maintain transparency with the public.” The full statement can be read below: The Providence Police Department takes all concerns from the public very seriously and with the utmost professionalism. In this particular case, the vehicle in question was found to be unregistered during a routine traffic stop, which is a violation of the law. The officer acted in full compliance with department protocols and state regulations. We understand that any encounter with law enforcement can be stressful, however, it’s important to note that officers are required to enforce all applicable laws, including those related to vehicle registration. We will continue to review the situation to ensure that proper procedures were followed and to maintain transparency with the public. If there are any concerns or questions about this incident, we encourage Mr. Barmore to reach out to the Providence Police Department so we can address them in a constructive manner. Barmore is out of NFL action indefinitely with blood clots and will not play in this weekend’s matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars. “We’re aware of the situation,” Patriots Head Coach Jerod Mayo said in a press conference Wednesday. “I had a conversation with him this morning.” The Patriots did not comment further on the matter.
