EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- As the weather gets colder, AAA Northeast is reminding drivers to be cautious, as the chance of colliding with a deer increases this time of year.
AAA said the most crashes involving a deer happen between October and December, since the animals are more aggressive during their mating season.
The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (RIDEM) reports that 1,374 deer were struck by cars last year, down 11% from 2022. That year saw 1,544 deer-involved crashes, the highest number since at least 2016.

AAA advised drivers to obey the speed limit, use high beams when safe, and be careful rounding curves or hills to decrease the chance of hitting a deer.
If you notice the deer early enough, you can blast your horn, the auto club added.
Drivers who do end up colliding with a deer should get their vehicle to a safe location and report the crash to RIDEM by calling (401)-222-3070.
