PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WPRI) — A new medical facility may be coming to Pawtucket. The city announced on Wednesday that it's "in the early stages" of collaborating with Care New England on a "state-of-the-art health care center" at 104 Brewster St. "This potential project represents an exciting opportunity to address the health care needs of our community," Mayor Don Grebien said in a press release. "While we are still in the exploratory stages, our partnership with Care New England holds the promise of enhancing services for Pawtucket residents and creating new opportunities for health care education." The initial plans say it will be three stories tall and 70,000 square feet. "Care New England is engaged in an open and productive dialogue with the city of Pawtucket about how it might best collaborate to potentially bring additional health care programs, services, and education to Pawtucket and its surrounding communities," Care New England President and CEO Dr. Michael Wagner said. The facility, if built, could have a "seven-day-a-week" urgent care center, the city said, and conversations with Brown University about medical residency programs are beginning. A spokesperson for Grebien told 12 News there isn't a cost estimate yet due to the project being "in the very early stages." The spokesperson added that the building's cost "would be on Care New England." A tentative timeline by the city, if the plans don't change, is for construction to start in September 2025 and be finished by August 2027.
