It was definitely a cold start to Wednesday across Central and Eastern Kentucky with temperatures dropping well into the 30s across the board. While a few sheltered spots managed to see some frost, winds stayed up enough to prevent temperatures from dropping in the low 30s thus keeping the widespread frost in check. With a little more sunshine in the mix  to go along with scattered clouds through the afternoon, it was a crisp October day as a northwest breeze held temperatures into the low to mid-50s in most locations. High pressure will build in from the west heading into early Thursday pushing drier air into the region. This will allow for clear skies and light winds, which are optimal conditions for good radiational cooling and widespread frost development. A Freeze Warning is now out for all of Central and Eastern Kentucky into Thursday morning. Temperatures should drop into the upper 20s in most of the sheltered spots and in the outlying areas creating the freeze potential, while the urban areas (Lexington) remain in the low 30s. Despite the growing season coming to an end you’ll want to cover any tender plants or bring them in if you want to hang onto them a bit longer since temperatures dipping down into the upper 20s could kill some of the outdoor vegetation. With plenty of sunshine through the day on Thursday afternoon highs should recover nicely with temperatures either side of the 60 degree mark. The forecast into the weekend looks fantastic with ideal conditions for mid to late October as high pressure dominates the weather across the eastern part of the country. With the high drifting eastward a bit we should see a return flow from the south which will allow for a gradual warm-up this weekend and beyond. Temperatures will climb back into the low to mid-70s for afternoon highs which is a bit above average for this time of the year with abundant sunshine expected each day. Make some outdoor plans for this weekend and get out and enjoy the beautiful fall weather that should stay put well into next week!
