EXCELSIOR SPRINGS, Mo. -- An investigation is underway following an apparent explosion in Excelsior Springs on Wednesday that left one person dead another injured. Excelsior Springs police say they received a call around 1:16 p.m. regarding a fire at Hart's Auto Repair at 10 Schwartz Avenue and a person actively on fire. KCPD updates officer’s condition after critical injury crash Wednesday When fire and police crews arrived at the scene they located an active fire at the business. Lt. Ryan Dowdy with Excelsior Springs police said he was one of the first responders on scene along with the fire department and witnessed a man on fire who was later pronounced dead. Dowdy says another victim, an employee at the business, was taken to the hospital with burns on his arm. Dowdy says some mechanical work was being done when something appeared to explode. Police said due to the type of business and the potential for flammable/explosive substances being present, the surrounding residences were evacuated. Injuries are unknown at this time. The Missouri State Fire Marshal is assisting in the investigation. People who were evacuated have since been able to return. This is a developing story.
