INDIANAPOLIS — Donald Rainwater, the Libertarian candidate for governor, has fired back at the Indiana Republican Party after a mailer — sent to hundreds of Hoosier mailboxes — leveled several personal attacks at the third-party candidate. Plastered on the mailer were insults calling Rainwater a "deadbeat dad" and a "perennial loser." Images of the mailer shared online show it was paid for by the Indiana Republican State Committee. While the mailer dredged up Rainwater's decades-old divorce and his failure to once pay his child support, Rainwater didn't shy away from addressing these financial and personal struggles from his past in his response to the attack ad. "I have repeatedly said during this campaign that I am an everyday average Hoosier. I have had financial struggles, occupational challenges, relationship failures, and I have plenty of human imperfections," Rainwater said. Rainwater called the mailer "pathetic" and an "embarrassment" to Sen. Mike Braun's Republican campaign for governor. "I also find it pathetic that the Indiana Republican State Committee, Senator Mike Braun, and Micah Beckwith are running such a failing campaign that they feel it necessary to attempt to get enough votes to win by attempting to diminish me instead of presenting candidates that can earn votes on their own merits," Rainwater said. Hoosiers chiming in online also expressed displeasure at the attack ad, with many expressing it went too far while others theorized it meant the Republican party was worried about losing the race. Rainwater, meanwhile, used the mailer's personal attacks to continue his push as an "everyday average Hoosier" who can relate to the average citizen who aren't a "member of the elite establishment" and have suffered from "occupational and financial difficulty." "If they think this of me, what do they think of other Hoosiers who have had similar experiences?" Rainwater asked. FOX59/CBS4 reached out to the Indiana Republican Party and Sen. Mike Braun's campaign for comment but has not heard back.
