INDIANAPOLIS — Three juveniles were arrested and now face criminal charges following an armed carjacking on Indy's near north side. Around 1:30 a.m. early Tuesday morning, IMPD was called to a Mobile gas station on Central Avenue. Per the report, a man stated he'd been carjacked a couple of blocks north of the gas station by 5 young men wearing masks and armed with handguns. The suspects stole the victim's driver's license, phone and cash before speeding away in his car. That victim escaped without being hurt. IMPD praised the victim for his cooperation and assistance in solving the case. "Thankfully he was cooperative with what they asked. That allowing him to get free and get to a safe place," said IMPD officer Tommy Thompson. Police quickly tracked the stolen car to Meadows Drive where three of the accused thieves were taken into custody. IMPD is actively searching for the other two suspects. At the same time, IMPD encourages all robbery victims to do what this victim did and live to tell the tale. "Our heart goes out to the victim and the traumatic incident they went through, but they cooperated, did what they were told by these suspects. They got to a safe place and were able to assist police and apprehend these suspects within hours," said Thompson. While their names remain private, police reports show the suspects arrested are 15, 16 and 17 years old. "They're old enough to know right from wrong and that's the problem we're having with our teenagers. They're not making good decisions and choices," said Reverend Malachi Walker. Reverend Walker, with Young Men Inc., mentors dozens of at-risk youth with a summer empowerment camp every year. He says the city needs more programs to keep kids of out of trouble, but parents also have to play a role by keeping their kids off the streets late at night. "It starts at home and that is the truth. It starts at home," said Walker. "Kids don't think about the consequences. They know about the consequences, but they'd rather take a chance." If anyone has additional information, please contact Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at (317) 262-8477 (TIPS). The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will make the final charging decision.
