GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV)- NEW Leaf Foods recently announced in a press release that are receiving a Schreiber Foods grant that will help cover the costs of items for an entire year. In a statement to Local 5 News, Schreiber Foods Community Relations Manager, Heather Milbach, said it was important for an organization like NEW Leaf Foods to receive this recognition. Sustainably Speaking: Battery reminders during Fire Prevention Week "Schreiber Foods’ vision is to do good through food, so we’re excited about supporting efforts, like The Brown County Seed Library (BCSL), that address food needs in our communities. This is a unique way to get healthy, nutritious food to people who need it in the Green Bay area." Heather Milbach, Schreiber Foods Community Relations Manager The Brown County Seed Library is a community, collaborative project that is committed to saving seeds that are true to type and distributing them to the public. Seeds for your garden are available on the second floor of the Brown County Seed Library and are free to pick up during the library's open hours. True-to-type seeds are grown out with the characteristics that you would expect them to be. For example, if you plant a cherry tomato seed, you would expect a cherry tomato to blossom from it. The seed library strives to prevent cross-pollination of seeds and promote locally grown, sustainable food options. Melissa Wass with the Brown County Seed Library said the group was excited when they heard the news that they would receive the grant and explained the group's plans for allocating the money. "We are going to be utilizing the money to pay for seeds, ones that we aren’t able to obtain and grow locally. We are going to use it to pay for supplies for packing envelopes, tape, that sort of thing and also for printing," says Wass. Wass goes on to say that by not having to worry about purchasing seeds, the group can instead focus on volunteer efforts and the education behind their 'Seed Steward program'. This program helps teach members of the community how to identify true-to-type seeds and how to preserve them. The seed library holds around twelve educational events a year, which are open to the public if you are interested in volunteering. Sustainably Speaking: Sabee Culinary Services elevates its cooking with fresh, locally sourced foods "The Brown County Seed Library likes to host a lot of educational events throughout the year," says AmeriCorps Service Member & NEW Leaf Foods Communication Coordinator Lauren Knisbeck. "For this month, we have seed packing coming up on October 26th and then on November 9th we have a seed packing event as well and they are both here at the Brown County Central Library". Brown County Seed Library also partners with multiple organizations for events and will be hosting an invasive species workshop with the Green Bay Conservation Corps. If you are interested in volunteering, becoming a master gardener or donating, head over to the NEW Master Gardeners website. You can also keep up with events on the NEW Leaf Foods website.
