BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A Baton Rouge woman accused of shooting and killing a 12-year-old girl in 2023 was sentenced to 20 years in prison on Wednesday, Oct. 16, according to court documents. Ester Williams, 27, of Baton Rouge, was sentenced to 20 years in prison on the charge of manslaughter. In July, Williams pleaded guilty to manslaughter in connection to the child's death. According to the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to a reported shooting in the 1400 block of Forestgrove Avenue in Central in May 2023. Deputies said that a woman sent kids she was with to knock on the door of an ex-boyfriend's home when Williams shot at the vehicle. The bullet struck the girl and killed her. Williams dropped her gun. Man pleads guilty after woman killed in 2023 hit-and-run in Baton Rouge Patrick Johnson, the second suspect in this case, reportedly picked up Williams' gun, and they both went inside the home, according to the sheriff's office. Johnson and Williams fled the scene and were both later caught and taken to jail. Search warrants were obtained for two homes on Forestgrove Avenue, but the gun was not found. In an interview, Johnson reportedly told deputies where the weapon was located, and his brother later surrendered it. Williams was initially charged with first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder. Johnson was initially charged with accessory after the fact for first-degree murder and accessory after the fact for attempted first-degree murder. A grand jury indicted Williams on second-degree murder in August 2023, according to court documents. Johnson was arrested in May 2023 and held until late September. He was released because he wasn't indicted within 120 days of arrest.
