(KRON) -- An East Bay bird shop owner was left “horrified” last month after discovering that her business was burglarized and two exotic birds were stolen from their cages. On Tuesday, the Concord Police Department announced that one of the two birds had been recovered, and two suspects were identified in the case. “Tofu,” a 25-year-old umbrella cockatoo, and his buddy “Plato,” a 28-year-old red-bellied parrot, were stolen from Feathered Follies in Concord in early September. It was the first time the business had been burglarized since opening in 2020, shop owner Mercedes Kemp told KRON4 at the time. String of auto burglaries in Hercules being investigated by police A lack of leads in the case allowed the search to go cold, Concord police said, before an unrelated criminal investigation by the Union City Police Department discovered vital evidence and uncovered new information. Search warrants were issued for locations in Fremont, San Jose, Union City and Modesto after follow-up operations by numerous Concord PD divisions, including the Financial Crimes Unit, Violence Suppression Unit, Special Enforcement Team, Special Victims Unit and Traffic Unit. Through investigation, detectives learned that Tofu was sold several times since being taken from Feathered Follies, authorities said. The final seller, located in Modesto, was cooperative with the investigation and police determined that the person was not aware that Tofu had been stolen. Two suspects in the case were identified by police as Edward Casey, of San Jose, and Erik Stabile, of Fremont. Casey was taken into custody, while Stabile has a warrant for his arrest and is outstanding. Tofu was reunited with his rightful owners on Tuesday, according to Concord police. Plato has still not been located, though the case remains active. Kemp told KRON4 last month that breaking the two bird friends apart is cruel and that they require special care.
