TOPEKA (KSNT) - Federal health officials say a meat and poultry recall is growing in scale as new information is released on the amount of food impacted by possible listeria contamination. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued new information on Oct. 15 regarding a recall involving products from the company BrucePac based out of Oklahoma. The initial recall, announced on Oct. 9, warned that nearly 10 million meat and poultry products were being recalled over listeria contamination risks. The FSIS said the original recall is being updated to reflect that an additional 1.7 million pounds of product are being included. This brings the total amount of meat and poultry being recalled to over 11.7 million pounds. The health agency also said, along with the products being distributed to restaurants and other institutions, it has now been discovered the products were also sent to schools. A full list of schools impacted by the recall was not made available on Oct. 15. A distribution list regarding which schools received the recalled food will be posted to the FSIS website when it is ready. This means it involves a health hazard situation where there exists a high risk for people coming into contact with the recalled product. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports on its website that listeria poses a large risk for those who are pregnant, newborns, older adults and those who have weakened immune systems. Others who become infected with listeria may become ill, but not seriously. Symptoms can include fever, flu-like symptoms, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, diarrhea and vomiting. Pregnant women infected with listeria may experience a miscarriage, stillbirth or premature delivery. The FSIS said the products were produced from May 31, 2024 to Oct. 8, 2024 and shipped to destinations nationwide.
