RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A man is fighting for his life after being shot by a Richmond Police officer, who is now on administrative leave. Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred near East Broad Street and North 29th Street. The Richmond Police Department said they responded to a call for a mental subject with a knife at around 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 15.   Richmond Police reported that the man had been threatening people earlier in the day with the knife. While officers were negotiating with the man, who was inside a residence, they learned that a woman was inside with him, shouting that she couldn’t escape. It's unclear at this time what the relationship between the two is. Police said they heard screams from inside the home. Concerned for her safety, officers went into the apartment. The man was shot by an officer and taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. A knife was found as officers tried to provide aid to the man.   “We have already begun an investigation into the actions of that officer at this time," said Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards. "So [the officer] is, obviously like anyone who's been in a situation like this, is emotional, but we are happy that no officers were injured during this encounter.”   No one else was reported hurt, and police are continuing their investigation. The officer who opened fire has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard for officer-involved shooting investigations.  Richmond Police said they typically release body-camera footage if it's a deadly officer-involved shooting. 8News spoke with a neighbor who said she's lived in the area for seven years, and that nothing like this has ever happened before.
