PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — New England Patriots defensive tackle Christian Barmore took to social media Tuesday morning after a traffic stop in Providence. According to a police report obtained by 12 News, the 25-year-old was pulled over just before 1 a.m. in the area of Elmwood Avenue. When officers explained why Barmore was stopped, they said he had an "attitude towards police" and handed over the paperwork for his Jeep in an "aggressive manner." Police learned that the registration expired last week and asked for any updated registration, which Barmore did not provide. After asking Barmore several times to step out of the vehicle, the report said officers saw him reach under the seat to try to hide something. Barmore eventually got out of the Jeep, but according to the report, he kept "pushing away from police stating he didn't want to be touched." During a search of the vehicle, officers found an ash cup and a blunt rolled with an unknown substance where he had reached under the seat, police said. Under the passenger-side seat, several tubes of marijuana were reportedly found. "It was at this time that Barmore walked towards a black Dodge Challenger and left the scene while still giving police a hard time," the report said. A short time later, Barmore posted on X that he "just experienced for the first time 5 Providence cops being very unprofessional racism at it's finest." Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez told 12 News the department takes all concerns from the public seriously and professionally. "In this particular case, the vehicle in question was found to be unregistered during a routine traffic stop, which is a violation of the law. The officer acted in full compliance with department protocols and state regulations," Perez explained. "We understand that any encounter with law enforcement can be stressful, however, it’s important to note that officers are required to enforce all applicable laws, including those related to vehicle registration," Perez continued. "We will continue to review the situation to ensure that proper procedures were followed and to maintain transparency with the public." Police also noted that there were multiple officers at the scene because some were field training officers. Barmore, who agreed to a four-year contract extension worth up to $92 million in the offseason, has not been playing after being diagnosed with blood clots in July. Close Thanks for signing up!
