SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) — After a couple of cool days, warmer and windy weather is returning to much of KELOLAND in the forecast. Rain chances are still low in the short-term forecast as a big ridge of high pressure remains in control of the weather pattern in the mid section of the nation. Our fire danger is at the top of the scale today across much of the region. A red flag warning is in effect for the areas shaded in pink on the map below. A fire weather watch is in effect for many of the same areas tomorrow. Futurecast shows a big warming trend in western SD today with highs in the mid 80s for Rapid City. Sioux Falls will stay in the lower to middle 60s, but that pocket of warmer weather will expand across much of KELOLAND tomorrow. South winds will stay strong through the next 48 hours ahead of the approaching cold front. The graphic below takes a closer look at the wind forecast. Notice the large areas of 20 to 40 mph winds in the forecast. What are the rain chances on Friday? You can see the weak system moving into the region and the "chances" of showers both along and behind the cold front. The best chances will be central and western SD on Friday. In fact, a little snow can't be ruled out in the Black Hills. The main upper-level low will move toward KELOLAND by Monday. We expect a few more showers in the region with this feature, but soaking rain is not likely. Here are the details of the forecast.
