MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A mother who lost her 16-year-old to gun violence in Cordova last Sunday is now speaking out about her son. Antonio Fason Jr. died after being shot at a friend's house. He was a junior at Germantown High School and had just turned 16 in September. ORIGINAL STORY: 16-year-old charged with murder after teen shot to death “He was just like outgoing, outspoken, and always smiling,” said Courtney McMullen, Mother. “He was like Mom can I go get my haircut, can I go to the haunted house with the other kids? And I was like yeah, sure.” Antonio Fason Jr. (Photo provided by family) McMullen says she knows the other child’s mother very well. So, the parents agreed Fason would spend the night. “That Sunday and I was like okay baby. I’m getting ready to go to church do you want me to come get you before or after? And he said after,” McMullen said. Unfortunately, several hours later, just before 3 p.m., deputies responded to Mill Hill Avenue and found Fason lying in the alley with a gunshot wound.  He died at Regional One Hospital.  “My baby was just sixteen. He didn’t deserve this at all," McMullen said. "I wish I was there just to tell him I love him for the last time and hold him while he was going through that or whatever but I just hate I wasn't there. I was ten minutes away." (Photo provided by family) Officers have arrested and charged a 16-year-old with Fason’s death. McMullen says the suspect was one of her son’s best friends.  “My baby had started calling that little boy his brother. So, unreal. It’s actually surreal to me because I don’t understand why. Why would he do that to someone he considered a brother,” McMullen said. ”I used to always sit with him and tell him that baby all these kids are not your friend.” 📡 See more breaking news, local news and weather from WREG.com for Memphis and the Mid-South. 📧 Sign up for WREG newsletters and have the latest top stories sent right to your inbox. She says she is heartbroken because her son was a good kid.  "He wasn’t carjacking, he wasn’t robbing, he wasn’t doing any of that. He was over at a friend's house," McMullen said. "My baby was going to the 12th grade, he was going to the military, he had plans he had bigger plans. " McMullen has started a GoFundMe to help lay her son to rest.
