MUNCIE, Ind. — A Muncie woman and a Delaware County inmate now face felony charges after allegedly trafficking drugs into the local jail. Meranda York, 34, and Beau Cleary, 36, have both been charged in Delaware County with two counts of trafficking with an inmate, a level 5 felony. York also faces an additional controlled substance possession charge - a level 6 felony. The charges against York and Cleary stem from several alleged attempts over the past year to traffic a controlled substance - specifically Suboxone - into the Delaware County Jail. Suboxone is a prescribed medicine used to treat opioid dependence and is not sold over the counter. Meranda York mugshot (via DCSO) Beau Cleary mugshot (via DCSO) Police were first made aware of an alleged attempt to bring drugs into the jail on June 18 after a suspicious package containing glasses, contacts and solution was delivered to inmate Cleary. The contact box and solution bottle had reportedly been tampered with and made to look like they had been factory sealed, police said. Inside the bottle of solution, court documents show police reportedly found a light orange-colored liquid with floating debris. Officers then identified these as dissolvable Suboxone strips. A few weeks later, on July 5, police said the woman who dropped off the first package returned to the jail. The woman - later identified as York - was captured on video dropping off a pair of reading glasses also intended for Cleary. Due to the prior dropoff from York containing contraband, jail staff flagged the glasses and turned them over to police. While looking at the glasses under a microscope, police reportedly found that a silicone piece was removed from the ear-rest arms and then reapplied. "I removed this silicone piece and observed an orange-in-color substance, wrapped in plastic," an officer wrote. "I removed the substance and observed a void where it appeared a tool had removed part of the plastic in order to conceal the substance located." Once lab tests revealed positive results for Suboxone on both packages delivered by York, officers went Tuesday to her Muncie home and arrested her. Police reportedly found 14 unopened Suboxone strips while searching her purse. While investigating York, police also reportedly learned that inmate Cleary "had knowledge of and communicated frequently with York about smuggling" the drugs in. The two reportedly even discussed hiding the drug in glasses and contact solution. York has since been booked into the Delaware County Jail and is being held on a $15,000 bond. Additional charges have also been filed against Cleary, who was originally being held in jail on charges of robbery and battery with a deadly weapon. Previous reporting shows that officers arrested Cleary in May after he allegedly shot a man in the leg during a robbery. For more on that case, click here. Criminal records show York also has a criminal history. She has previously been charged in several Indiana counties with possession of meth, marijuana and paraphernalia. Online court records have not yet been updated to show initial hearing dates in either suspect's case.
