SUAMICO, Wis. (WFRV) - Officials in Suamico say new updates/new iPhones are causing the fire department to respond to crashes that turn out to be false alarms. According to a release from the Suamico Fire Department, these new updates/new phones have a Crash Detection feature that detects strong impacts while in a moving vehicle and triggers an alert before automatically calling emergency services if there is no response in 20 seconds after impact. Officials are asking drivers to please be more aware of where their phones are as the alerts can be accidentally triggered if the phone is left on a vehicle and falls off hitting the pavement after the vehicle drives off. Wisconsin man arrested after high-speed Maserati chase and drug bust Once the phone hits the pavement it notifies the fire department's dispatch center of a vehicle crash leading to fire trucks, police officers, and ambulances responding to an area just to find a phone lying on the road. Officials say the crash detection feature only works on iPhone 14 models or later and Apple Watch Series 8 or later and it can be disabled in the settings app. For more information about the Crash Detection feature, click here.
