DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – The Wall That Heals, a replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, will be on display in Dorchester County for four days this month. The three-quarter scale replica and an accompanying mobile education center aim to teach people about the impact of the Vietnam War while also honoring the more than three million Americans who served. It also bears the names of the 58,281 men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in the war. The Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement agencies provided an escort as a 53-foot trailer carried the mobile exhibit into Dorchester County on Tuesday morning. The truck passed through the Town of Summerville and will be on display in Ridgeville from October 17 through 20. A welcome home ceremony will follow on Thursday along with an opening ceremony. Taps will be played at the closing of the exhibit each night. At dusk on Friday, the wall will be illuminated orange to bring awareness to Agent Orange, and a candlelight vigil is planned for Saturday evening. The event will hold a closing ceremony Sunday afternoon. The Wall replica is 375 feet in length and stands 7.5 feet at its tallest point. Organizers say visitors will experience The Wall rising above them as they walk toward the apex, a key feature of the design of the wall in Washington, D.C. Visitors can do name rubbings of individual service members’ names. “The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund is pleased to bring The Wall That Heals mobile exhibit to Dorchester County to allow local veterans and their family members a chance to experience The Wall,” said Jim Knotts, president and CEO of VVMF in a news release. “Hosting The Wall That Heals provides an opportunity to honor and remember all those who served and sacrificed in the Vietnam War and educate visitors on the continuing impact of the Vietnam War on America.” The exhibit will be on display at the Dorchester Heritage Center Site off US Highway 78 in Ridgeville. Admission and parking are free. Click here for more information.
