Today, The Atlanta Voice was named a Press Forward grant recipient. This is not just a recognition but a significant step towards filling critical information gaps and serving our communities. We are part of an inaugural, historic group of more than 200 local newsrooms across the country, and your support will help us continue this vital work.  Our peers include newer nonprofits, some of which were launched in response to emerging needs during the pandemic and established for-profits that have been adapting and innovating for over a century. Some newsrooms are covering stories from the vast American countryside, where they often serve as the sole news source for communities spread across hundreds of miles. Meanwhile, other outlets are focusing on people of color and linguistically diverse communities that traditional news sources have overlooked.Press Forward is funding twice as many news organizations as it initially planned through its first open call. A review panel of national foundation and journalism leaders read about how our reporting is making a difference right here at home.Since 1966, The Atlanta Voice’s mission has been to help shape the narrative about the African American diaspora. We achieve this by producing and distributing compelling, informative, and educational content across multiple platforms, focusing the world’s attention on what it truly means to be Black in America. We are unafraid to tackle sensitive issues and take bold stances on matters that concern our audience or affect their daily lives, whether positively or negatively. Our audience relies on us for journalistic leadership, and we are confident in our ability to provide it.Over the years, we have:The Atlanta Voice has consistently won NNPA awards for journalistic excellenceEthnic Media Collaboration, a nonpartisan partnership of BIPOC media including The Atlanta Voice, Georgia Asian Times, and MundoNOW, hosted a TriCaucus Legislative Town Hall. The event aimed to provide a platform for each Legislative Caucus Chairperson to share their perspectives on legislation and their work at the State Capitol. The focus was specifically on the impact of the legislation on their respective communities in Georgia.We opened WAREhouse Studios as a hub for community discussions on important issues and to address grassroots concerns that are often overlooked by the mainstream media. The studio has implemented point-counterpoint programming, operational consistency, and a sustainable business model, all while staying true to our motto of consistently giving “a voice to the voiceless.”The Atlanta Voice was the first black-owned and operated paper to have an exclusive interview with Vice President Kamala Harris.Before the pandemic, The Atlanta Voice premiered a docuseries called “Peachtree and Pine,” which addressed the disparities and responses surrounding the closure of the city’s largest homeless shelter.The $100,000 we are receiving from Press Forward is more than just a grant.
