The Heritage of Green Hills, a senior living community in Cumru Township, Berks County, recently held a series of fundraisers to support the Alzheimer’s Association. The fundraising kicked off with an ongoing campus-wide Got Sneakers? drive (https://gotsneakers.com) and then continued through mid-October with a 50/50 raffle, a pretzel sale, a car wash, a bake sale and a tasty chili cook-off, which was judged by Tom Rader of WFMZ. Participants who came out to show support included friends, families, team members and residents from The Heritage’s independent living, personal care and memory care neighborhoods. “The Heritage is committed to helping the Alzheimer’s Association in its goal of finding a cure,” said Executive Director Doug Walther. “We’re also dedicated to giving expert, compassionate and individual-focused care to our residents with dementia.” Memory care at The Heritage of Green Hills The foundation of memory care at The Heritage is understanding that each resident is an individual with unique preferences, needs and histories. “We work with families and the residents themselves to build an ever-expanding picture of who they are, including their likes and dislikes,” explained Personal Care Administrator Michele Butch. “It seems like a little thing, but letting a late riser sleep in, instead of just waking everyone up at the same time because it’s convenient for you, shows respect and fosters a sense of autonomy.” Residents are encouraged to participate in carefully designed activities that give them a feeling of purpose, help them engage in the world around them and are fun, too. “We are always looking for ways we can promote wellness, happiness and personal dignity in our safe, secure, and comfortable environment,” Butch said. “We know that what remains is greater than what may have been lost.” Caregiver support group The Heritage of Green Hills hosts a monthly caregiver support group for members of the public with the Dementia Friends of Pennsylvania. It is held the fourth Thursday of every month, and attendees may participate in person or via Zoom. To RSVP, call 484-755-3226. The Care Center turns 2 The state-of-the art Care Center at The Heritage of Green Hills, which recently celebrated its second anniversary, is home to the community’s personal care and memory care neighborhoods. It offers 70 spacious personal care and memory care one-bedroom and studio suites, and wide, light-filled hallways in a cozy, home-like setting. The stunning Personal Care patio is a popular gathering spot with its gardens, fountains and fire pit, while Memory Care has its own beautiful secure patio and courtyard gardens. Though the Care Center has its own building, its residents enjoy the same high level of hospitality as their neighbors in independent living, including made-to-order chef-prepared meals featuring farm-fresh seasonal ingredients. The Care Center offers a robust schedule of activities for residents to participate in as they wish. A new rotating gallery is currently being built, giving residents and their families a variety of fresh art to enjoy. “We celebrated the Care Center’s second anniversary with a few festive events that highlight the community’s famous young-at-heart spirit,” said Care Center Wellness Director Erin Snyder. At the end-of-summer Splash Party, residents were armed with water balloons, water pistols and super soakers and encouraged to take aim at the staff. It was a great way to cool off, too! The Personal Care neighborhood’s seated cheerleading squad, The Heritage Cuties, gave a special second-anniversary cheer — complete with pompoms — at the Care Center’s birthday party.
