This year marks two momentous anniversaries for Dunwoody Village: the 50th anniversary of its founding as one of the Delaware Valley’s first continuing care retirement communities and the 100th anniversary of the original Dunwoody Home. Throughout September and early October, residents, staff and community members came together to celebrate these historic milestones in a series of events that honored Dunwoody’s rich past and vibrant present. One of the highlights was the unveiling of a newly restored portrait of William Hood Dunwoody, the visionary whose generosity and compassion laid the foundation for the Dunwoody Home and Dunwoody Village. The portrait, which had originally hung in the Dunwoody Home, was revealed on Sept. 10 during a special reception in the lobby. Residents enjoyed a champagne toast and cake as they admired the restored artwork, which now stands as a symbol of Dunwoody’s enduring legacy. On Sept. 16, residents were transported back in time during Retro Night in Hearthside Dining. The menu featured popular dishes from 1974, the year Dunwoody Village was established, and many attendees embraced the theme by dressing up in ’70s attire. The nostalgic evening was a delightful tribute to the community’s early days. That same evening, residents had the opportunity to delve into Dunwoody’s storied history through a presentation by resident Norma Winther. “Dunwoody History —  A Three-Part Story” offered a fascinating glimpse into the community’s past, bringing to life the people and events that shaped its development over the decades. Entertainment was also in full swing on Sept. 17, when comedian Tony Braithwaite, artistic director at Act II Playhouse, brought laughter and joy to the community with a special performance. His engaging wit and charm made the night unforgettable. Maureen Casey, Dunwoody Village president/CEO, welcomes the residents and introduces the guests at the Anniversary Gala on Sept. 19. (Dunwoody Village) The centerpiece of the celebrations was the anniversary gala on Sept. 19. Attendees gathered for a reception that included remarks from President/CEO Maureen Casey, Chairman of the Board of Trustees Bert Dalby, Residents’ Association President Steven Ruzansky and distinguished township, county, state and federal officials. The Dining Services team pulled out all the stops to make the evening enjoyable. (Dunwoody Village) The evening was a true celebration of Dunwoody’s impact not only on its residents but also on the wider community. The festivities continued into October, with a celebratory gathering on Oct. 2 for the residents of the care center, and a lunch for staff on Oct. 9, ensuring that everyone in the Dunwoody Village family is included in this milestone year. Additionally, the Dunwoody Village Residents’ Association has made a meaningful contribution to the anniversary celebrations by sponsoring an exhibit in the lobby. This exhibit chronicles the life of a majestic white ash tree that dated to the 1880s and once stood as the largest of its species in Delaware County and the fifth-largest in Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, the tree met its demise during a storm in 2023, but its legacy lives on through the exhibit, which links the tree’s rings to major world and Dunwoody events, offering a unique reflection on the passage of time and the community’s deep roots. As Dunwoody Village celebrates these two remarkable anniversaries, it continues to honor its legacy of care, community and commitment to enriching the lives of its residents. Here’s to 50 years of service and a century of history — and to many more years ahead!
