HONOLULU (KHON2) -- High pressure to the north and northeast of the islands is causing strong trade winds across the state. A wind advisory is in effect for the Big Island summits tonight, with sustained winds between 45-55 mph. These strong winds are expected to continue into Wednesday, with the possibility of reaching advisory levels again at the summits and in some windy lower areas. A cold front north of Hawaii will push the high pressure further northeast, slightly weakening wind speeds by Thursday night. A low pressure system will remain stationary northwest of Hawaii, maintaining moderate east-southeasterly winds through Friday. These winds will weaken in leeward areas due to terrain effects, leading to localized sea breezes and some clouds on Friday afternoon, before trade winds strengthen again over the weekend. Trade winds will bring brief clouds and showers to the islands through Wednesday, mainly affecting windward and mauka areas. A love will move over the windward and southeast Big Island Wednesday night and spread west, increasing clouds and showers through Friday night. A weak upper-level low moving in northeast of the state may enhance these showers. Drier conditions from Saturday into the middle of next week, with moderate east-southeast winds continuing.
