GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — The Triad is home to many musicians and countless music festivals, but this year one of the longest-running festivals celebrated more than 60 years of music. With help from the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro, the Eastern Music Festival is showcasing the next generation of musicians. The sweet sound of music fills downtown Greensboro, but the Eastern Music Festival is not your typical music festival that only lasts a day or a weekend. For five weeks every summer, it draws musicians from all over the world to Greensboro.  They're not just any musicians either. They are students who are studying classical instruments, piano, classical guitar, and even conducting. They are inspiring and learning from each other as they hone their skills. Sarah Spencer, the Outreach Performance Coordinator for EMF, says the festival is "still inspirational because as a student, you're around other musicians, so you're like hearing music 24/7 and then you always want to practice." Check out the difference Community Foundations are making here in the Piedmont Triad The festival provides different stages for the performers to play, from venues that hold an audience of hundreds to small, more intimate settings. Spencer says it's part of her job to "take the students and their chamber groups and bring them out into the Greensboro community. I take them to nursing homes, to schools, museums, even coffee shops, just so that the audiences that don't make it to our beautiful Dana Auditorium still hear the beautiful music that we're making."  While the music is important, the Eastern Music Festival also allows students to get up close and personal coaching from professional musicians, performers and conducters -- people who were once where the students are now. It's full circle for Shane Savage, an EMF Double Bass Fellow. "So the last time I was here in 2018, I was 17 years old, going to my senior year. As soon as I left, I said if ever they open up a fellowship position for the double bass in the faculty orchestra, I'm all over it," he says. "And lo and behold, I'm here with the fellow position that started last year, and so it means the world to me to be back."  While the festival serves as a training ground, it's also an outreach program to inspire younger children to get involved in their school bands and be interested in classical music so classical songs can continue to inspire and entertain future generations. The Eastern Music Festival will return in June for its  64th season.
