AUSTIN (KXAN) — There are a lot of ways to hype up the matchup at Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium this weekend. When Texas hosts Georgia, it will be two brands that carry some weight and serious history. Georgia has been the class of the sport since head coach Kirby Smart took the helm in Athens. Texas has steadily improved under its head man Steve Sarkisian to the point where they are now the top-ranked team in the nation. Texas always repeats the cliché that they want to play with emotion, not play emotional. In a game like Saturday where energy and emotion will presumably be at levels rarely known, handling the moment takes a lot. We asked Longhorns players to explain just how they are able to not play emotionally in a game like this. "Big games are fun games to me to be honest," Longhorns senior linebacker David Gbenda said. "Regardless of the atmosphere and the energy that's going on around us, just focus on your key in the moment and take it play by play instead of getting so enamored with what's going on around you." "I feel like when you start to get emotional or you're upset about a single play, that kind of takes your fun and love away from the game," Longhorns senior center Jake Majors said. "That's just kind of what I do. I remind the guys let's go have fun." Sarkisian preaches that mantra to his players. But it can mean more when the Longhorns see it or hear it from a teammate. Particularly their leader. "It all starts with Quinn [Ewers]," Longhorns junior running back Jaydon Blue said. "He's been here three years so we follow his footsteps. He's a cool, calm and collected guy. When we see that he doesn't get rattled it puts a lot of confidence in us." "I think that starts earlier in the week," said the junior Ewers. "Just knowing there's going to be swings and knowing how big momentum changes are. And understanding there is going to be adversity, but it's how you come back." Texas hosts Georgia at 6:30 p.m. Saturday in Austin. Texas Gameday is the official pregame show of Texas football and airs before kickoff at 5:30 p.m. on KBVO. Jonathan Thomas will host the show alongside Texas football legends Dan Neil and Alex Okafor.
