WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - A park in West Springfield will be receiving upgrades and residents had the chance to hear about the proposed improvements Tuesday night. The town is in the works of developing a design plan that will help improve the amenities at Mittineague Park, which includes parking concerns. The east entrance to West Springfield's Mittineague Park is getting a makeover! Residents were able to hear about the improvements at a public meeting at the town hall on Tuesday evening. Town officials are looking to redesign the layout to improve the baseball field and create more parking spots for visitors. "It can be a little chaotic sometimes when the baseball fields hit into the softball fields, so we're actually getting rid of one field, after working without athletics and recreation we can make do with two fields and it kind of opens up space for more playground area," said Director of Central Maintenance, Ben Paquette. In addition to the playground getting updated, the town is looking to add a new splash pad.Mayor Will Reichelt says the town is also proposing to expand its parking lot with at least 25 spaces. "There's a parking lot now in the back corner, we're going to look to expand that and add more parking on the way in as you loop in around the tennis courts and have a better flow of traffic into there," said Reichelt. "And with everything kind of centrally located you're not too far from your car or the playgrounds the restrooms, baseball fields things like that," added Paquette. Some of the other advancements include adding extra bathrooms throughout the park and installing shaded structures to provide some cooling space during the summer. "It's going to take what we have now and bring it to the next generation for the next 25, 35 years and give people what we are seeing in other communities and what we want here in West Springfield," said Reichelt. The first phase of construction for this roughly million-dollar project is set to begin next summer.
