EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Gov. Dan McKee and the Rhode Island Department of Transportation provided updates Tuesday morning as demolition work now resumes on the westbound side of the Washington Bridge. One East Providence resident said the westbound Washington Bridge demolition has been nothing short of disastrous for her. “There’s been a lot of shaking,” East Providence resident, Naomi Caldwell said. “I can actually feel it in my house on the second floor when they start working.” Not only the physical movement she described, but the appearance of her home has also changed. “I had it power washed this time last year and it’s filthy again,” Caldwell said. “I mean, that’s an expense to me.” Following a short RIDOT meeting on Friday with no community questions taken, Gov. McKee said he’s planning to personally head up a second meeting on Thursday at 6 p.m. to address concerns, and does not expect it be the last one as the rebuilding process continues. “We are not going to have a straight line from the beginning to the end,” Gov. McKee said. “The fact of the matter is that we are on site right now and we are in a timeline where the demolition is being done.” Officials said the timeline for the demolition of the deck to be complete has been moved to February of 2025. RIDOT said it is doing additional monitoring of the bridge until then. “Not because we suspect something is wrong, but because we want to make sure as we move through this process that nothing goes wrong with it, and take extreme measures,” RIDOT Director of Transportation, Peter Alviti said. The next update in the reconstruction process is not expected until Dec. 11, when the shortlist of candidates for the reconstruction plan to come out. Categories: News, Providence, Rhode Island
