Memphis, Tenn. -- MLGW says a large apartment building in the medical district lost power for 24 hours after the property owner failed to pay their utility bill. Residents at The Helix on North Manassas in the Medical District contacted WREG Monday after their lights went out. The power was back on Tuesday afternoon. The Helix at the District on N. Manassas Street. WREG photo One tenant, who didn't want to be identified, said she lost everything in her fridge. She said the apartment managers told her power to the high rise was out due to trees being cut on the property, but when she called MLGW, she found out it was due to non-payment. "It's a mess. People expect to come home and have their lights on," she said. 400 International Paper employees in Memphis to be laid off Tuesday afternoon, MLGLW confirmed that the outage was due to an unpaid utility bill. "The services have been restored. We have spoken with the property owner and discussed ways to avoid this from happening again," said MLGW. The Helix at the District on N. Manassas Street. WREG photo One tenant said The Wogan Group, the company that owns The Helix, gave residents a $50 gift card to cover the loss of any food. Residents said the outage impacted around 200 apartments. Some tenants still weren't sure why they were without electricity for a day. "It's very bad. Nothing like this has happened before," said one man. One resident said she was relieved her power had been restored but was upset she had to contact MLGW to find out the problem. WREG reached out to The Wogan Group late in the day, but we have not heard back yet. We've also tried to contact the managers of the apartment building.
