ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) - The East Allen County Schools Board of School Trustees approved all budget related items during Tuesday night's school board meeting. School board officials approved a $161 million budget for next year. Around $30 million is slotted for the debt service fund, $94 million would go towards the education fund, and more than $37 million for the operations fund. For capital projects, EACS plans on upgrading its security camera system each year through 2027. That system would cost $75,000 and the replacement of district vehicles budgeted for $110,000. EACS approves new Leo Intermediate School, new building for Southwick Elementary School Chief Financial Officer, Patrick McCann explained with the increase in enrollment this school year, EACS will have to continue to add onto schools throughout the district, which is built into the budget. "The construction projects that East Allen is doing and that goes into the debt service plan," said McCann. "We're going to bring that low with the tax rate ending up being .99 cents for East Allen County Schools. Our big intention is to get these construction projects to build our schools, because our schools are at capacity. We have a lot of increase in students and we need to be prepared for that." The district also plans to continue adding to its extensive bus fleet. Currently, they have 129 buses in total with 23 on order. EACS plans to sell three by the end of the year leaving a total of 149 buses. The next school board meeting is Wednesday, November 6.
