NWS issues red flag warning for southeast Louisiana: What you need to know, how to stay safe
Oct 15, 2024
BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The National Weather Service New Orleans has issued a red flag warning for all of southeast Louisiana. Here's what you need to know, and some safety tips residents should follow to be prepared.
A red flag warning will be in effect starting at 8 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16 and ending at 7 p.m. that same day, due to critical fire weather conditions, according to NWS New Orleans.
What is a red flag warning? According to the NWS, a red flag warning "means warm temperatures, very low humidities, and stronger winds are expected to combine to produce an increased risk of fire danger."
According to Louisiana State Climatologist Jay Grymes, the state's current drought conditions create an increased threat of wildfires. Temperatures are expected to drop to a comfortable level and winds will increase, adding the risk of rapid spread of uncontrolled fires.

Some fire weather safety tips that residents can follow include avoiding all fire-related activities, not starting a campfire or igniting a burn pile or grass, not parking on dry grass and following burn bans and other restrictions, according to NWS New Orleans.
"Many of you remember the wildfires from last year. Please heed these warnings! Stay safe, do not burn, and call us if you need us! It is always illegal to burn outside in East Baton Rouge Parish. If you see smoke in the coming days, just give us a call," said the St. George Fire Department in a Facebook post.
