A new multi-agency task force aims to clean up Roosevelt Ave. and a surrounding area in Queens that’s become a notorious hot spot for prostitution, drug trafficking and criminal activity. “We would not allow this to happen in communities that are extremely affluent. It should not happen anywhere in our city,” Mayor Adams said Tuesday evening, standing in front of the Corona Ave. and 103rd St. subway station surrounded by city officials and members of the NYPD. The Roosevelt Ave. Task Force will involve a number of city agencies — including the NYPD, FDNY, and departments of health and sanitation — all working together to eliminate crime, focusing on shutting down illegal brothels that have “taken over” the area, Adams said. Over the past year, members of the NYPD have been addressing community concerns about prostitution, illegal brothels, unlicensed vendors and food carts, retail theft and the sale of stolen goods, and other quality-of-life offenses. (Michael Appleton/Mayoral Photography Office) Earlier Tuesday, the NYPD raided a brothel at 95-45 Roosevelt Ave., where women were being sex-trafficked, and shut down the operation, Adams noted. The new push, which will take place over the next 90 days, will focus on Roosevelt Ave. from 74th St. to 111th St.,NYPD Deputy Commissioner Kaz Daughtry said. “But the impact of this work will resonate beyond these blocks,” Daughtry said. “Over the last 60 days, we have closely monitored activity in the area, and it was clear that immediate action was necessary. For example, illegal brothels, unlicensed vendors, unregistered mopeds and food cars operating without proper permits diminished the quality of life within this community.” “One of the most heinous crimes that we are tackling in this operation is human sex trafficking,” Daughtry said. “Our top priorities to rescue and support victims of sex trafficking, we will work closely with social service organizations, including the Department of Homeless Services (DHS) to provide safe housing. “Medical care, counseling and legal support for these victims will make it clear we will not stop until every victim is rescued and every trafficker is put behind bars where they belong.”
