Mayor Michele Hanson, who was first elected in 2010, is running unopposed. There are two seats on the council up for election this fall. Longtime Bayport City Council member Connie Carlson has decided not to run for re-election. Council member Ethan Gilmore is running for re-election; Carl Bliss and Dave Farr also have filed. General information about the Nov. 5, 2024, election is online at twincities.com/news/politics/elections including information on candidates for races in Ramsey, Dakota and Washington counties. Carl Bliss Age: 48 Carl Bliss (Courtesy of the candidate) What would your top priorities be if elected? I aim to normalize ongoing communication between the citizens and the council. This includes encouraging public input on key issues, and using city platforms to share updates and gather feedback. Transparency and accessibility are key to fostering trust and ensuring the council reflects the community’s true needs and aspirations. What qualifies you to hold this position? I bring a blend of experience in leadership, community engagement, and public service to this position. As a third-generation Bayport homeowner, a member of the Bayport Planning Commission, and a professional with a background in project management and a Master’s in Organizational Leadership, I have a deep understanding of our community’s needs and the skills to navigate complex issues. My focus on open communication and collaboration equips me to effectively represent our citizens and drive positive change for Bayport. What do you think is the primary role of government? Government serves and protects citizens. Government should also act as a bridge between the people and the resources they need, ensuring that every voice is heard and considered in decision-making processes. How do you work to understand, and then learn from, opinions that differ from your own and people who disagree with you? I seek to understand differing opinions by engaging in active listening, asking open-ended questions, and approaching each perspective with curiosity and respect. I view disagreements as opportunities to learn and grow, rather than defend my own views. By fostering an environment that encourages open dialogue, I aim to build understanding and find common ground for progress. Website or contact information: None provided.
