EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Shark license plates will soon be on more Rhode Island vehicles. The Atlantic Shark Institute (ASI) announced that commercial shark license plates will be available for pickup on Saturday, Oct. 19, from 9 a.m. to noon in front of the Cranston DMV. "We are so appreciative and overwhelmed by the support that this charity plate has received," ASI Executive Director Jon Dodd said. "With three versions on the road, and the motorcycle version in pre-order, every plate sold helps with our critical research." The plate, which was designed and painted by marine artist Paul McPhee, is the fastest-growing charity plate in Rhode Island history, according to Dodd. Like all charity plates, the DMV could not produce any until 600 were preordered. Learn more about the ASI in our 12 on 12: Sharks The plate features a large mako shark, which the ASI says is now endangered worldwide. "As we say at the Atlantic Shark Institute, shark health is ocean health, and ocean health is our health. This plate reflects that and so much more, and we love how Rhode Islanders statewide have recognized that," Dodd said. The plate can be ordered on the Atlantic Shark Institute website. The cost is $42.50 for a set of plates, with $20 from each plate fee benefiting the ASI. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now Ocean, Bay & Beach Report SIGN UP NOW
