MEMPHIS, Tenn. — More than three months after the director of Memphis Animal Services was placed on leave during an investigation, he is still on the city's payroll, city officials said Tuesday. Ty Coleman was placed on leave in June after taking the director's job in January. The investigation followed the death of a dog who died in the shelter's care, allegedly after being left outside in the heat. More complaints followed, about issues including dogs being adopted without being spayed or neutered. On Tuesday, City Council member Jerri Green asked the city's COO the status of the investigation. He replied that there was no timeline on when the investigation would be complete. "This has been several months, and we're no further along, in the information we've received on the investigation, so I would just like to know when the end is near," Green said. Coleman's salary is $120,000 annually, according to a city database. Memphis Animal Services leader dogged by controversy Council member Yolanda Cooper-Sutton was direct: "Get Ty Coleman off of our payroll as soon and as quick as possible. I said what I said." Mary Claire Borys has been serving as interim director. According to MAS, in the last three months, 1,412 animals have been adopted and 495 have been euthanized at the shelter.
