It definitely felt like mid October across Central and Eastern Kentucky Tuesday with breezy and cool conditions once again. An upper level system dropping through the Ohio Valley kept clouds around and even helped crank out a few scattered showers along with a rumble of thunder or two. Add in the brisk northwest wind at 10 to 15 miles per hour and temperatures struggled to reach the mid-50s for afternoon highs, a good 15 degrees below average for this time of the year. In fact a few spots dropped back into the upper 40s as the air cooled off where the showers moved through. Some of the heavy showers contained “graupel” which is a form of soft hail caused by super cooled water droplets that typically occurs during cool season events. As the upper level system pulls eastward quickly into the overnight skies will clear and winds should lighten up enough to allow for frost to develop across the area into Wednesday morning. A Frost Advisory is out for all of Central and Eastern Kentucky with morning lows expected to dip into the low to mid-30s. While the growing season is rapidly coming to an end, you’ll want to cover any plants you want to hang on to for a bit longer or bring them indoors if possible. High pressure will build in from the west ushering in a return of sunshine on Wednesday but with the overall cool air-mass in place, afternoon highs should only recover into the low 60s so we’ll stay below average by mid-October standards the next few days. Our best chance for the entire region being impacted by a widespread frost should be Thursday morning as high pressure literally sits right overhead. This will set-up optimal conditions with radiational cooling (clear skies and light winds) so early morning lows will dip into the low-30s with some of the outlying areas dropping below freezing. The area of high pressure will drift eastward into the late week with more sunshine expected. With a bit of a return flow kicking in, temperatures will begin to recover nicely Thursday and Friday with afternoon highs climbing back through the 60s. The upcoming weekend looks perfect for this time of the year as the quiet weather pattern stays in place. Expect more sunshine around the area with afternoon highs climbing back into the low 70s. This should be ideal for any outdoor activities and with all the fall festivals in full swing across Central and Eastern Kentucky make some plans and soak up the pleasant weather while it stays put well into next week.
