CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) - Two new projects could bring hundreds of affordable housing units to downtown Charleston. One80 Place, an organization that works to prevent and end homelessness, announced a plan that will provide affordable housing for unhoused individuals and families. The project at 573 Meeting Street will be a six-story mixed-use living space with 70 apartments. Tenants will pay no more than 30% of income in rent. Construction is expected to be complete by the summer of 2026. Meanwhile, Charleston Mayor William Cogswell also announced that he plans to buy two downtown properties and turn them into affordable housing units. Mayor Cogswell sent a letter of intent to Charleston County’s administrator to buy 993 and 995 Morrisson Drive, which he hopes to turn into 500 affordable housing units. The development would include a permanent affordable deed restriction on all 500 units, ensuring long-term affordability for the community. Mayor Cogswell noted that it is conveniently located next to existing bus stops and office buildings. “Teachers, firefighters, hospitality workers and more are being pushed further away from where they work due to our affordability crisis,” he said. “That puts more cars on the road, adds to urban sprawl, and makes it more difficult for employers to hire. Creating affordable housing within our city will lessen these issues for our small businesses, our residents, and ease the strain on our infrastructure.”
