NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) has modernized its Sex Offender Registry by incorporating signature tablets, a move designed to streamline operations and save taxpayer dollars. Previously, offenders were required to sign paper forms, which were then manually processed. Now, the registry will utilize electronic forms on the signature tablets, allowing documents to be signed and automatically uploaded into the CCSO system for immediate processing. This change is expected to significantly reduce paperwork and increase efficiency for the registry's staff. The upgrade was made possible by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), which provided each law enforcement agency in the state with one tablet free of charge, through a grant. The CCSO invested further, purchasing an additional four tablets at a cost of $2,000.56. The tablets utilize software from Topaz Systems Incorporated to handle the electronic signatures. This update is aimed at reducing costs associated with paper forms and supplies, while also improving workflow for registry staff. The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for tracking and maintaining records of all registered sex offenders in the area. The Sex Offender Registry office is open for public services on Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m., and on Thursday mornings from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
