GOHSEP: Louisiana faces wildfire threat during drought, burn bans in effect across parishes
Oct 15, 2024
BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (GOHSEP) announced an increased wildfire threat in Louisiana.
According to Louisiana State Climatologist Jay Grymes, a cold, dry front is expected to sweep through the state. The state's current drought conditions create an increased threat of wildfires.
Temperatures will drop to a comfortable level and winds will increase, adding the risk of rapid spread of uncontrolled fires.
The U.S. Drought Monitor shows areas across the state to be abnormally dry, moderate drought and have a severe drought threat.
GOHSEP announced a burn ban is in effect for four parishes, as of Oct. 14 and advises other parishes to issue bans in the coming days.

Grymes said the National Weather Service in Lake Charles has issued a fire weather watch for its warning area, which is southwest, south-central and central Louisiana parishes.
